Now Offering Custom Design Services!

Ways to Make Your
Home a Personal Sanctuary

Select the Space
Choose an area where others won't be walking through.  Ideally, it will have plenty of natural light and a window with a view.

Find an Object
Define your personal area with an object that means something to you -- a loom, a writing desk, an easel, a workbench, a good reading chair. Or find a beautiful rug, and let that be the foundation of a relaxation space.

Create Coziness
Make your space cozy. If space is at a premium, choose diminutive furnishings -- a small writing desk, a basic extension table, an armless side chair. Hang fabric to lower the apparent height of the ceiling. You can also hang drapes at the window -- thick velvet if you want a deep, dark hideaway; gossamer muslin if you want filtered, soft light.

The Right Accents
Avoid clutter, which can be distracting, by editing your treasures to just a few carefully chosen things. You can always change them out with the seasons.

Create a fresh look with your furniture.

We have moved down the street
to bigger space east of
Laurelwood Public House and Brewery!
Create a Fresh Look with Your Furniture

One of the most common mistakes made when arranging a large  space is lining all the furniture up along the walls. Make your spacious room cozier by pulling the furniture in from the walls, and create more than one sitting area. In a great room, for example, one area may serve as a gathering space with the television as a focal point. A second, smaller sitting area can consist of one or two chairs with a small table, positioned in front of a window.

Another tactic is to place furniture on a diagonal. This can work well in a large bedroom. Try placing the bed on a diagonal. Then, create an 'invisible' border; or room within a room, by using an area rug. Place other pieces in line with the rug, instead of the walls.

The furniture itself will play a role in how cozy a room feels. The size of your pieces should be in proportion to the room. For example, a large, overstuffed sofa works great in a large space. Likewise, small, light furniture will "float" in a large room, so you want to avoid these. Fabrics also play into "filling" a large space. Soft, textured chenille is a great, cozy fabric. Microfiber is another good choice, both for the cozy feel and the easy care. The use of scatter pillows and throws can also add warmth and style to a room.

Need a clever decorating idea for the 4th of July?

We have moved down the street

Laurelwood Public House and Brewery!
Need a Clever Decorating Idea for the 4th of July?
The Fourth of July is just around the corner so why not try  out one of  these quick and easy decorating ideas to show your patriotic party sense.

1. Make large bouquets of red, white, and blue balloons. Tie them together with ribbon streamers.

2. Visit Distinctively Home and pick up our patriotic "God Bless America" hanging sign.

3. Tie red striped fabric around a chair. Tie blue fabric in a bow around red striped fabric for accent on the back of the chair.

4. Red, white, and blue sprinkles are not just for ice cream. Pour a layer of each color in a clear glass vase then place a candle inside for patriotic lighting.

5. Cover various size tin cans with red, white, and blue gift wrap or scrapbook paper.  Place flowers, food, or utensils in them for a festive buffet table.
