Now Offering Custom Design Services!

Ways to Make Your
Home a Personal Sanctuary

Select the Space
Choose an area where others won't be walking through.  Ideally, it will have plenty of natural light and a window with a view.

Find an Object
Define your personal area with an object that means something to you -- a loom, a writing desk, an easel, a workbench, a good reading chair. Or find a beautiful rug, and let that be the foundation of a relaxation space.

Create Coziness
Make your space cozy. If space is at a premium, choose diminutive furnishings -- a small writing desk, a basic extension table, an armless side chair. Hang fabric to lower the apparent height of the ceiling. You can also hang drapes at the window -- thick velvet if you want a deep, dark hideaway; gossamer muslin if you want filtered, soft light.

The Right Accents
Avoid clutter, which can be distracting, by editing your treasures to just a few carefully chosen things. You can always change them out with the seasons.

Create a fresh look with your furniture.

We have moved down the street
to bigger space east of
Laurelwood Public House and Brewery!
Create a Fresh Look with Your Furniture

One of the most common mistakes made when arranging a large  space is lining all the furniture up along the walls. Make your spacious room cozier by pulling the furniture in from the walls, and create more than one sitting area. In a great room, for example, one area may serve as a gathering space with the television as a focal point. A second, smaller sitting area can consist of one or two chairs with a small table, positioned in front of a window.

Another tactic is to place furniture on a diagonal. This can work well in a large bedroom. Try placing the bed on a diagonal. Then, create an 'invisible' border; or room within a room, by using an area rug. Place other pieces in line with the rug, instead of the walls.

The furniture itself will play a role in how cozy a room feels. The size of your pieces should be in proportion to the room. For example, a large, overstuffed sofa works great in a large space. Likewise, small, light furniture will "float" in a large room, so you want to avoid these. Fabrics also play into "filling" a large space. Soft, textured chenille is a great, cozy fabric. Microfiber is another good choice, both for the cozy feel and the easy care. The use of scatter pillows and throws can also add warmth and style to a room.

Decorate your mantle in style this Christmas!

A Few Ideas for Christmas Mantels

  • If you have a mirror hanging over your mantel give it a holiday boost by layering a wreath over it. The easiest way is to use a ribbon. Use the ribbon to hang the wreath and attach it to the back of the mirror.
  • Drape an evergreen garland across the mantel and then tuck in different sizes of candles and candle-holders. The items needn't all match, but the look makes a greater impact if they're all the same material. For instance, try using mercury glass candlesticks of different shapes and sizes with ivory candles.
  • Fill some clear glass vases with festive items like ornaments, pine-cones or cranberries. Display larger vases at the ends of the mantel and then use smaller containers as you work your way towards the centre. Vary the sizes and shapes of the vases to keep it interesting. If you want to make this look even more festive add some greenery around the bases of the vases.
  • Try decorating a Christmas mantel in one color. For example, use silver ornaments and accessories to create an impact. If you're doing this remember that more is more. Use silver ornaments, topiaries, candlesticks and whatever else you desire. The various shapes and textures will keep it looking interesting even though there's no color variation.
  • Flowers and small potted trees (or topiaries) always look great. Try putting matching items on each end of the mantel and then put a lovely arrangement in the middle. You can use one large arrangement or use a few small ones clustered together in the centre.

Decorate with mirrors to increase space perception.

Decorative Mirrors

A mirror in the bathroom or in the living room will increase light and space perception.

Use mirrors to open up a space and make it look larger and make sure that the mirror is reflecting something appealling to look at , an attractive chandelier in the living room, an attractive landscape, which will bring the vibrant energy of a garden...

Mirrors have many curative uses. Mirrors should never distort or cut into the image of a person...

Mirrors are useful in small spaces where they apparently double the size of the area. Large mirrors will make a room feel much larger.
Increase the light
They are also useful in dark spaces where you want to reflect as much of the available light back into the the room as possible. This applies to basement apartments or a room that only receives northern light. You may be able to strategically place a mirror so that natural light from a window is reflected back into a dark area of the room or a stagnant corner.

At Distinctively Home Interiors we have mirrors to fit that perfect space!  Visit our website to view our bling!

Fun wine fact

Cork vs. Screw Top

Move over, cork, and make way for screw caps. Today, screw caps are replacing corks on more than just inexpensive bottles. Currently, screw caps seal 75 percent of Australian wines and 93 percent of New Zealand wines, and they're gaining popularity in all countries, including here in the U.S.

5 Decorating Tips for Small Houses

Maximize your space with this helpful advice

“If it’s done right, a smaller house doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice—in fact, it can be a much more attractive place to live,” says Marianne Cusato, author of The Value of Design and an architect who has won national awards for her small-house plans. “It’s not about shrinking everything down, but rather about using spaces for more than one purpose and building those spaces with an attention to quality and good design.”

As big houses on large lots have declined in value, some of the most sought-after real estate in America today is smaller homes in mixed-use neighborhoods, places with sidewalks and front porches and a feeling of community. In other words, neighborhoods that look a lot like those from the 1950s.

If the current economic downturn means that you’ve had to put on hold your plans to move up—or that you need to downsize to a smaller home—think of it as an opportunity. Here are some tips for making a smaller home work for you.

1. Make the Most of What You Have
You don’t have to use a room in the way its name suggests. “Just because it’s a dining room doesn’t mean you have to use it as one,” says Sarah Susanka, author of The Not So Big House: A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live. “Make it a home office or sewing room or both. It’s your house and you can do what you want with it.”
2. Remodel Small
To open up a modest-size home, put in interior windows or take out walls or parts of walls. The house will feel larger without added square footage.
3. Declutter
When Cusato lived in a 300-squarefoot New York apartment for eight years, she told her family not to give her any gift that she had to store. “I loved the feeling that everything I had, I really wanted and needed,” she says. “Ironically, now that I’ve moved into a space that’s 1,180 square feet, it doesn’t feel nearly as well organized.”
4. Celebrate Details
A smaller house doesn’t mean you need to downsize on quality. Focus on the smaller details that add texture and beauty to a room, such as elegant light fixtures or natural woodwork in floors or moldings. Realize that less can be more.
5. Add an Outdoor Room
Extend your living space by creating attractive outdoor places in which to sit and socialize. During the warm months, you’ll gain square footage without hiring a builder or taking out a home equity loan.
